05/18 - 05/22/2015 Joel Mobley and Cecille Labuda give talks at ASA 169 in Pittsburgh.

Joel Mobley and Cecille Labuda gave talks at the 169th Meeting of the Acoustical Society of America.  Joel's talk was Hot Topics in Physical Acoustics and Cecille's talk was Direct Visualization of Shear Waves in Viscoelastic Fluid Using Microspheres.  The talk abstracts are below.

Hot Topics in Physical Acoustics. Joel Mobley

From the astronomical to the molecular, acoustics is central to phenomena across a vast spectrum of length scales. This talk provides an overview of recent developments in physical acoustics across the size continuum, while looking more in depth in three areas. At the larger end of the scale, the generation of the infrasound by cyclonic storms is considered, specifically looking at the infrasonic signatures that can be used to track and characterize these systems. At intermediate length scales, advances in acoustic metamaterial (AM) research are examined. Specific examples will include energy-harvesting metasurfaces and soft matter systems. Moving to the small end of the scale, phoxonic crystals (PxC) are discussed. PxC’s possess both optical and acoustic band gaps and can be used to trap light and sound together, enhancing the strength of acousto-optic interactions.

05/13/2015 New paper accepted for publication in JASA-EL

A new paper, "Direct visualization of shear waves in micellar fluid using microspheres", authored by Cecille Labuda. Connor Tierney, Sunethra Dayavansha and Joseph Gladden has been accepted for publication in the Journal of the Acoustical Society Express Letters.  The paper will soon be available online and will be inthe next print volume of the journal.

05/07/2015 Davis Rogers and Connor Tierney inducted into Sigma Pi Sigma.

Two of our undergrads, Davis Rogers and Connor Tierney, were inducted into Sigma Pi Sigma, the Physics honor society.  Four other students were also inducted.  Students are only inducted into the honor society by invitation and only students with top academic performances who perform research or outreach in physics are invited to join.

The 2015 Sigma Pi Sigma inductees were (from left to right), Ryan Chapman, Davis Rogers, Emily Smith, Connor Tierney and Piero Bracamonte.

04/28/2015 Sunethra Dayavansha and Nazanin Omidi Participate in UM Research Forum.

Sunethra Dayavansha and Nazanin Omidi particpated in the 5th Graduate Research Forum hosted on the University of Mississippi campus by the Graduate School and the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs at the Thad Cochran Research Center.  Sunethra presented a poster and Nazanin presented a talk at the forum.
